No single science can solve the challenges of the environment. In this interdisciplinary major, you鈥檒l study the concepts and methods of a wide range of biological and physical sciences鈥攁nd prepare to tackle some of the world鈥檚 most pressing and complicated problems.

This powerful program cuts across academic disciplines to give you a deep and wide-ranging view of the environment and its challenges. In small classes, you鈥檒l learn side-by-side with outstanding faculty. You鈥檒l study biology, chemistry, ecology, physics, botany, mathematics and
computer science. You鈥檒l find a new home in Parmer Hall, the campus鈥檚 newest building, with 16 laboratories and state-of-the-art scientific equipment. You鈥檒l develop your computational and statistical skills, and learn to think, write, speak, analyze and solve problems at a whole new level. This major will give you the knowledge and skills you鈥檒l need to make important contributions in a field that is growing rapidly in size and significance.

Practical experience is built into the curriculum. Our internships draw on Chicago鈥檚 world-class research, scientific and corporate resources. You can combine academic study with compassionate service to people in need, or complete your own, hands-on research project in close collaboration with faculty (and often with university funding). You also can immerse yourself in a different society and culture through our outstanding study abroad program. You鈥檒l have your choice of programs on four continents.
